The battle of Islandlwana in 1879 was arguably the British Army"s most humiliating defeat. As the result of extraordinary military blunders by those in command, the Zulus crushed a modern British army. But, this day has gone down in history as one of Britain"s proudest because a few miles away, at Rorke"s Drift, a much smaller British victory was won and those at the summit of power used it as a smoke-screen, rather than pursuing those responsible for the defeat at Islandlwana.
