As the armies of Europe mobilised to prepare for The Great War, military experts predicted that this would be a war fought by cavalry. Why then did it end up being fought in the trenches? Why was this the first - and last - trench war the world would see? This program discovers that the answers to these questions lie not so much with Generals and politicians, but with technology: the train, tinned food, the telephone, the wireless, barbed wire, hydraulically buffered artillery guns and the machine gun.
