Charles and Camilla’s romance blossomed in 1971 when the two met at a polo match. Camilla was not aristocratic enough to become the Princess of Wales, so Charles married Diana. But matrimony was no barrier to their continued liaisons. Despite his marriage to Diana, Charles saw Camilla regularly: at secret love nests around the country, at the houses of friends, even at Highgrove. Diana was not unaware, and in 1992 she and the Prince were separated, with Camilla implicitly blamed for the breakdown of their relationship. In 1995, a few months after Charles’s admission of adultery on television, Camilla and her husband were divorced. The way now appeared clear for Charles and Camilla to be together.
